What is the best way to contact the news media with a story?

I believe I have a story that could land national newspaper coverage,if the right people are contacted. I don't want to start by having the story go to the local media...Is that how it normally works?Does the local media have to pick it up first, then if it's interesting a bigger newspaper picks it up?Is there a way to contact a bigger newspaper from the start AND actually get a response?|||it depends on what your story is about. give us a hint that does not compromise your "exclusive"|||If they Jewish media doesn't like it, it will never see the light of day.
